Call for volunteers for Advanced Learning Advisory Committee

Over at Save Seattle Schools, there is a post with a call for volunteers for the Advanced Learning Advisory Committee, "Seattle Schools Seeks Volunteers for Advanced Learning Advisory Committee", and some discussion of what is involved.

Please see also the earlier post on this blog, "New committees on future of APP", which has a bit more information about two new committees forming around advanced learning and the future of advanced learning in Seattle Public Schools.

If you're interested in this topic, you might also want to take a look at Charlie Mas' recent post, "Advanced Learning Committees - History and Future", talking about his experience with some of these committees over the last decade.

I would be interested in volunteering in this Committee to see exactly what is going on with the APP program at the district, but the planned time of the meeting (between 3 30-5 30pm in a weekday) wouldn't work for me in any circumstances. This is the timeframe when I need to pick up my students and taxi them for their after school activities. I feel that many other parents will have to face the same issue. Maybe this is the whole point???

Perhaps the time is meant to accommodate teachers rather than inconvenience parents.

I think 7:24 Anon has it right. 1:23 Anon, why don't you see if a fellow APP parent could taxi your kids on those days so you can volunteer? I'm thinking many people would rather drive than go to meetings and would appreciate you volunteering.

Sorry, but this is NOT a good reason to be volunteering for this committee. Perhaps you misstated your reason, but we don't need curious folks on the committee that want to see what's going on. We need parents with experience who have been involved in AL programs for years that can hit the ground running and gather/give solid advice to the district.

At least I'm still holding some level of hope that the reason for this committee is to "advise", not just get early warning as to district plans.

To dw:
It is really good to hear that you (and maybe others also) seriously think that the district will listen to a volunteer committee to change things around for the AL programs just 2.5 years after the split of the APP program when the whole community stood against it. And I am not even talking about how they destroyed the Spectrum program over the last couple of years...

Reposting this from SSS as you guys may have more answers.

I am a bit confused. So trying to work through the layers of where the AL advisory committee is going to do. Since the info is going to be used by FACMA (oh, my god, another acronym), is this just about numbers, where to put the programs/students or about the content and quality of the AL programs? Another word it sounds like the priority is space and finding places to deliver AL. But what is AL right now? Who figures that out? Individual buidings? Right now it seems spectrum is no longer spectrum, but more ALO (whatever that means) and APP is a little of this and that depending on which building you are in (referring to recent APP Hamilton discussion).

Is this an eventual move to have building determines its own AL model? If you disperse the AL programs all around to more schools, you get more flexibility to deal with capacity problem, but not actual AL program problem.

-confused and curious

I think if you are planning to be on this advisory committee, both capacity and program problems need to be of equal priority. I am fearful that the in trying to solve our immediate capacity issue along with more budget cuts, the district will end up shortchanging or undermining our AL programs, not unlike the recent school closure/reopening debacle.

They already have 2 capacity management committees set up. And the APP AC is there also. Why do they need another committee I wonder?

I thought that we already have people to be on this committee? I have heard a few names thrown about.

Confused as well.

The district has already decided to leave APP at Lincoln for another year after the current school year. I believe this committee is to help advise on the future of the program after that.
