2016 Testing Results Thread Part 4

This is the 4th part to this thread continuing the discussion on the test results for this year.

Thread Part 1

Thread Part 3

Update: Test Scores on The Source

"Eligibility decisions are being made daily. When the Multidisciplinary Selection Committee makes a decision regarding a student’s eligibility, test scores are posted in The Source. Families who have not yet received a decision letter can access their student’s scores on The Source."

I found the new AL page on the left hand side under the Library and Schoology options. It only seems to show the status i.e. HCC/Spectrum and not CogAT scores.

As of 3/28 CogAT scores are now there for at least kids who took the full test.

I'm hoping this will be the final installment in this year's testing saga.

Hey UCDS questioner... I have some feedback about UCDS if you ever check this post again.

Our son attended UCDS for more than a year. Although UCDS advertises itself as a place for 'gifted' students, during our time there it became clear they used the term as marketing rather than an aspect of the curriculum. My joke was that it was for the 'financially gifted'. The school is very nice and goes a long way to make parents feel it is a worthwhile place to send their kids. The children are all hand picked to be very well behaved and orderly, but not intellectually advanced. In talking with the teachers, we felt they lacked training about 'gifted' traits in kids and actually steered us towards OT when our child seemed bored.

We still have friends there who like the school very much and feel the cost is worth it. We didn't. Our child is now in the HCC program. He didn't stumble at all when presented with harder work, but he does complain about the chaotic nature of the classroom as compared to UCDS. The teacher to student ratio is doubled in SPS over UCDS, so the classroom can get pretty rowdy in HCC. I hope that helps.

Hello,
My first comment/question here.
Our son is a first grader. He is bi-lingual and was slow to fully understand English reading as we don't speak English at home. He spends his summers overseas where he has no exposure to English for 2 months or more at a time. As a Kindergartner, he did not take the advanced learning tests. He first took the tests in the Spring of 2015, when he only scored an 81 on reading and a 97 on math, with his CogAT score of 91. His school only tests once a year. Based on that, he was rejected for AL/HCC, so we appealed the decision in late March 2016, and took him to a school approved private tester. He scored 97 on Full Scale IQ index, 99 on General Ability Cognitive Index and 99 on reading composite and 99.9 on math composite. We sent in the appeal with these private scores and an appeal letter describing how he reads in two languages, does advanced math, puts together Legos for kids 14 and over, etc. and still the appeal was rejected. We are very upset as he tells us he doesn't enjoy school work as the homework they give him is still basic 6+2=8 and other simple things that he has long since known.

They say you can't appeal and appeal decision, but are there any options? I'd be inclined to do anything to address this matter. Thank you

Anon@ 1:45, Can you email Stephen Martin or Janine Madaffari and make sure that this decision wasn't sent in error? Did you send a complete copy of all the private testing?

Those scores should absolutely have qualified him for HCC. Do email them to the two people listed above with a note indicating you are not attempting to appeal the result of your appeal, but instead are asking if they had all of the scores when they made the decision.

I am wondering if they just denied all appeals, this year. I heard from a friend this week that her child's screener score was too low for Spectrum. She sent in private scores they received when investigating a possible learning disability and were told by advanced learning staff that they were no longer accepting private test results. I assume she sent them in before staff admitted they couldn't change the rukes on their own.
